AI Drafting

Guide

Envoy uses AI to draft press releases, pitches, articles, and social posts, research a contact from a URL, coach you on a deal, pull details off a scanned business card, and generate images. All of it runs through one setting in Settings → AI: a managed credit included with your plan, or your own API key.

Managed credit or your own key

By default, AI features work out of the box using a small monthly credit included with your plan - nothing to configure, even on Free and Starter. Growth and Agency include a larger monthly credit (see pricing for the amounts). Need more than your monthly allowance in a given month?Settings → Billing has a one-off "Buy more AI credit" top-up on top of it. If you'd rather use your own model or billing, switch to "Bring your own key" and add a key for OpenRouter, OpenAI, or Anthropic. This is an organisation-wide setting, not a per-request choice: once you switch, every text-drafting AI feature in Envoy uses your key until you switch back. Self-hosted instances have no managed credit at all, since there's no Envoy billing behind them - you'll need your own key to use any AI feature.

Managed text generations always run on a fixed, low-cost model, regardless of what you'd choose yourself, so a single request can't burn through a month's credit. Your own key isn't metered by Envoy at all - you're billed directly by whichever provider you connect. Image generation works a little differently - see below.

Generating images

The Media page's "Generate with AI" lets you pick between two models (a cheaper one and a pricier one, with the approximate cost per image shown before you generate), describe what you want, and optionally pick an aspect ratio. Generating costs credit whether or not you keep the result - review it, then either "Use this" to save it into your media library or discard it and try again. Unlike text drafting, you can choose either model on managed credit; bringing your own key for images is narrower than the general BYOK switch above, though - it only supports an OpenRouter key, not OpenAI or Anthropic directly, and is toggled separately inSettings → AI.

Where AI shows up

Document editors offer AI drafting matched to the document's type (a press release gets press-release-style drafting, and so on). Campaigns can generate pitch copy for a specific contact, saved into your notes for that contact rather than sent automatically. Contact detail pages can research a contact from a URL you give it, or from their existing bio and notes if there's already enough there to work with. Deal pages offer AI coaching based on the deal's stage and recent activity. New contacts can be pre-filled by scanning a business card photo. The Media page generates images, as above.Settings → AI also has two standalone brand-level tools: generating an ideal-customer-profile summary and a marketing-strategy summary, both informed by whatever you've filled in on Brand Positioning.

Checking what it's doing

Envoy doesn't show a cost breakdown per request - only your remaining managed balance for the month, in Settings. What it does show is the actual prompt: any AI panel has a "View prompt" option that reveals exactly what was sent to the model and which model answered, so you're never guessing what's happening behind a generation.
